If you’ve got a big event coming up this spring, or are just looking for a more low-maintenance way to keep your eyebrows looking good, you might have considered semi-permanent makeup. For brows, the most popular options are tinting and microblading, which we offer at our Hull salon. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of each method.
What does microblading involve?
Microblading involves using a handheld tool with tiny needles that create deposits of pigment, like a semi-permanent tattoo. The strokes are very fine and mimic the natural appearance of brow hairs. The results will last between 12 to 18 months, depending on how well the aftercare instructions are followed and individual skin type.
The procedure typically takes about one hour, and it may be a little uncomfortable, but not unduly painful, particularly if a numbing cream is used. The results are fully visible after the brows have healed, which usually takes around seven to 14 days. It may be necessary to have a touch up treatment about six to eight weeks later to perfect the look.
Microblading is more expensive than tinting, with typical prices £300-£400. Be wary of beauty salons offering cheaper procedures, because they may not be using the best equipment and products, or have fully trained staff.
Microblading can be tailored to suit your individual face shape and skin tone, helping to set off your features with defined brows that require no effort to style with pencils or brow gels every morning. This saves you time, and ensures that your brows will look flawless all day and throughout the evening.
What does brow tinting involve?
Brow tinting involves using a semi-permanent dye to enhance the colour and shape of your eyebrows. It is useful for creating extra thickness and definition if your brows are not the shape you want.
Tinting is a non-invasive procedure that is quick, affordable and causes no discomfort or downtime. The results are immediately visible, so there’s no need to plan the treatment weeks in advance.
However, the results are short-lasting, typically between three to six weeks. The tint can also fade if it’s exposed to direct sunlight, chlorine in swimming pools, or certain skincare products.
The results will not be as natural looking as microblading, and if you have very fine or sparse brows, it won’t address this issue because the tint is applied to the hairs that are there, rather than creating the appearance of new ones. Your brows will simply look a little fuller, neater and more defined than previously.
Which treatment is right for you?
If you are looking for a temporary way to enhance the appearance of your brows before a big event, then tinting could work for you. It is also a quick and affordable way to experiment with different colours and looks without a more permanent commitment.
If your brows are sparse and fine, microblading can help to make them look fuller in a natural way. It’s also a much more long-term solution that will save you time when getting ready to go out.
